Questions to Ask While Reading the Bible
- âWhat is he quoting?â
- âWhy is he quoting it?â
- âWho else is quoting it?â
Yeshua Tells You How to Read the Bible
11Â And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
12Â But when Yeshua heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13Â But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Does anyone in the Christian Church go read what he meant?
The purpose of Yeshua telling you to go learn what this means is because he already knows that everyoneâs initial assumption of what it means is wrong. He didnât ask a question, he commanded you to go learn. So what is he quoting?
6Â For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
7Â But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.
The reason he quotes Hosea 6 is to tell you that God no longer desires people to keep the sacrificial law, but instead he calls everyone to keep the 10 commandments. Yeshua came to fulfill the sacrifical law that was only added to the law of God through Israelâs disobedience. When we continue to study this same way, we can learn what mercy means. (Mercy)
Exodus 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Deuteronomy 7:9Â Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Now we know that when Yeshua says âI will have mercyâ or âI desired mercy,â he really meant âI desired my covenant to be kept.â
He Opens the Ears
Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
Why were Davidâs ears opened? Why was he able to understand what scripture truly meant? It was because he kept Godâs commandments.
98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
What you will encounter in the Christian Chruch today is statements like these:
- âWeâre not under the Law anymore, weâre under Grace.â
- âThe Old Testament is 99% fulfilled.â
- âThe Old Testament was the old covenant â itâs been fulfilled and done away with.â
- âJesus replaced the Law.â
- âThatâs the Old Testament.â
- âThe Law was just a shadow â we are in Christ now.â
- âPaul says weâre free from the Law.â
- âJesus summed it all up in two commandments. Thatâs all we need.â
- âThe Old Testament was to point us to Jesus â once you have Jesus, you donât need it anymore.â
However, Yeshua read to his disciples the âOld Testamentâ so that they would be able to understand what he was saying. He even spoke a parable of what most christians say today:
29Â Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30Â And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31Â And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Donât you hear most christians say, âJesus rose from the dead, thatâs all we need to repent.â However, Yeshua says that if they donât listen to what Moses and the prophets wrote, they wonât believe what the true prophesied messiah said.
God will open your ears to gain understanding if you keep his commandments. Thatâs why John says:
1 John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
That truth is the spirit of truth that is only given to those that keep the commandments. Yeshua says this plainly:
15Â If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16Â And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17Â Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Isaiah Tells You How to Read the Bible
9Â Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10Â For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11Â For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12Â To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13Â But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
To gain understanding of the scripture, Isaiah says that you first must get weaned off the milk. So, what is the âmilkâ that Isaiah speaks of? Paul tells us that those that are still on the milk are babes/new in the faith, but those that are learned will eat the meat.
Think of a newborn baby, will you give it meat once it is born or will you give it milk? You will first give them sometimes really simple for them to digest, then you will give them the tougher, meatier things. This is what God does for his people. First, he gives them the basic understanding in the word, and once they get well-versed in that, he will give them something meatier because they will be able to handle that now.
Hebrew 5:13-14
13Â For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14Â But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2Â Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Now you can see how Paul defines the âmilkâ as the principles of Yeshuaâs doctrine, put simply, repentance. (Paul speaks more about âmilkâ in 1 Corinthians 3)
Since we understand what âmilkâ is, letâs jump back to what Isaiah said.
We can now understand that verse 9 means God will give more understanding in his word once we repent and get more understanding in the basics. In verse 10, he tells us how to actually read the Bible, which, in fact, we have already been doing.
Precept Upon Precept
Isaiah 28:10Â For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
precept (H6673)
×ŚÖˇ× tsav, tsav; or ×ŚÖ¸× tsâv; from H6680; an injunction:âcommandment, precept.
Really, Isaiah is saying âcommandment upon commandment.â That means that to understand the FULL instruction of something, you have to add each commandment of God together to know what he requires of you. Letâs take the sabbath for a simple example.
The first precept is for you to keep the sabbath holy.
Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
The next precept is for you to make sure that those within your household (if you own the household) are not working as well, and you wouldnât cause others to work.
Exodus 20:10Â But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
We could keep adding each precept of the sabbath together to understand Godâs full instruction of keeping the sabbath.
Now, an example that many are in error about â the feasts.
Many people in the âso-calledâ Torah movenement read verses like this:
Exodus 12:14Â And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
They will read this verse and say, âSee, it says right there to keep the feasts forever, thatâs why we must keep them now,â but what is the next precept?
Deuteornomy 12:5Â But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
13Â Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:
14Â But in the place which the Lord shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
1 Kings 11:36 And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
So, the next precept is to only do the feasts in Jerusalem. Another precept in Deuteronomy 12 is to remove all the idols from the land. Once you read prophecy, you realize that God doesnât require the feasts anymore, but will reestablish them in the new kingdom.
Line Upon Line
Isaiah 28:10Â For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
The second part about reading the bible is what we have been doing â reading line upon line. That means you will be flipping through chapters pretty often to understand what someone is saying. You could say that God wrote his word in Idioms (Bible Idioms).
When we read Matthew 9:13, then went to Hosea 6:6-7, that was an example of doing this.
This is how the word of God was preserved even though there is a lying pen of the scribes (Jeremiah 8:8).
Reading âprecept upon preceptâ and âline upon lineâ is the âstammering lip and another tongueâ that God refers to. Those that read his word this way will learn about his true sabbath rest and the refreshing of the covenant.
There is another group of people that are being spoken to in this way (Isaiah 28:13), but they stumble at the word because they chose not to listen to the watchmen that were showing them what is written in the bible according to âstammering lipâ. Therefore, they are taken into great tribulation. You might be tempted to think, âWould God really punish me for getting a precept of his instruction?â Letâs see:
Hosea 4:6Â My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
law (H8451)
ת֟×Öš×¨Ö¸× tĂ´wrâh, to-rawâ; or ×ŞÖšÖź×¨Ö¸× tĂ´râh; from H3384; a precept or statute, especially the Decalogue or Pentateuch:âlaw.
Daniel Tells You How He Read
1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
The only way Daniel would understand this is by reading âline upon line.â
9 Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the Lord, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.
10 Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle.
11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations.
Enter Into the Work of the Prophets
34 Yeshua saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
Yeshua plainly says that the âworkâ is to do the will of God, then he goes on to talk about a harvest. From that, we know Yeshua is talking about working a harvest and making sure to plant seeds. This goes with another parable - the parable of the seedsower - but you can briefly understand this as telling people the truth of the word.
When Yeshua says that someone else sowed and you are to enter into the labor/work that they did, who would be the people that did the work (the will of God)? It would be the prophets. How would you enter into the work that they did? By preaching what they prophesied would happen. The only way to do this is by receiving the spirit of truth â the same spirit that they received. Each of the prophets will give you different pieces of information, so it is up to you to be diligent enough to search out what is being said.
Why He Spoke in Parables
10Â And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11Â He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12Â For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13Â Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14Â And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15Â For this peopleâs heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
16Â But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
17Â For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
âBlessedâ is a title of the 144k â the watchmen. Those that God chooses to reveal his word to can become this blessed if they endure. The only way that you will be able to endure when God speaks to you is to give out what he has given to you. That is why Yeshua said this:
Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
So. when you understand the parables â which are written so that you read âline upon lineâ â you must give out freely what God showed you.
